​Another tick season rolled around, and it was time to put my dogs back on their tick medication.

For years, I relied on the expensive three-month chewables. But now they require a prescription from the veterinarian, so by the time you factor in the cost of the medication and the vet appointment, they've become a significant expense. And if you have more than one dog... you practically need to take out a second mortgage on your house.

The monthly topical alternatives didn't seem like the answer either. They only lasted a few weeks and still didn't stop ticks from hitching a ride home.

If you're a dog owner, you probably know the feeling. You're curled up on the couch with your dog and suddenly spot a tick crawling across your arm. Even though my dogs were protected, I still found myself worrying about the ticks that came home with us after every hike.

Living in Nova Scotia, where Lyme disease has become an increasing concern, I started looking for a more natural approach that wouldn't cost a fortune. I wanted something I could feel good about using on my dogs and on myself—something that could become part of our outdoor routine.
